Unlike screws that hold materials together with threads, set screws exert pressure at the tip to hold objects in place.  The cup has a thin edge that digs into the contact surface for high holding power.  Type 316 Stainless Steel is more resistant to corrosion, solvents, and pitting caused by chlorides and sulfates than 18-8 stainless steel.
